Supply Chains Security: A Crucial Question

The Israel-US war on Iran that started in February 2026 and still goes on, has exposed the fragility and vulnerability of global supply chains and maritime chokepoints especially those of Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb. These maritime corridors carry most of the world's energy and commercial cargo, making them vital to international trade. War, naval blockades, drone strikes, and mining operations in these straits can quickly trigger global economic instability, energy price spikes, and supply shortages. The months-long deadlock between Iran and the US has showed that marine security measures are insufficient to protect sophisticated, interdependent commerce networks. The article argues that today’s world with more uncertain politics requires greater monitoring systems, crisis-response mechanisms, and international administration of critical waterways to keep trade and energy moving.

Strategic Significance of Maritime Corridors

The maritime corridors are arteries of global commercial activities. They connect production centers and markets, enabling the transport of goods such as oil, food, raw materials and industrial products. Their importance is reflected in their ability to reduce transportation costs, speed up deliveries and support the growth of international trade.

The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s single most important oil passageway, forming a chokepoint between the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The 39km strait is the only route to the open ocean for over one-sixth of global oil production and one-third of the world’s liquified natural gas (LNG).

Similarly, Bab-el-Mandeb connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, between Yemen and Djibouti at the southern end of the Red Sea. It serves as a vital maritime channel connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe, with a significant portion of global trade passing through its waters each year. According to World Bank data, approximately 30 percent of oil and 40 percent of dry goods are transported via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, making the Bab el-Mandeb Strait a crucial route for these shipments.

Together, these routes support the movement of energy, manufactured goods, food products, industrial materials, and consumer commodities across continents.

Implications of Closure

The world economy remains heavily dependent upon these supply chains, however they remain exposed to military conflicts, political tensions and emerging technological threats as demonstrated in the ongoing US-Iran war. A single regional crisis has demonstrated how quickly energy prices, commercial shipping and global financial markets can be shaken when the strategic chokepoints are threatened.

Energy sector is the first to be affected by these disruptions. For instance, international trade and especially the energy supply got severely affected by the recent closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The crisis is pushing up prices for commodities tied to Gulf exports. Crude oil and fertilizer prices have risen sharply, reflecting the region’s central role in global supply chains. Grain, by contrast, has not yet experienced comparable price spikes seen in recent shocks. Sustained increases in energy and fertilizer prices could affect global food production prices over time. Higher energy costs are already increasing food prices in some markets. 

With increasing instability in Hormuz, Gulf states have started reliance on Red Sea export routes, which made Bab al-Mandeb an essential corridor for energy flows. As the strait has witnessed stress due to Houthi’s attacks in recent past, its closure or disruption amidst ongoing regional instability can block up to a quarter of the world’s oil and gas supply, triggering increased global energy prices and leading towards exacerbating inflation and straining economies already dealing with supply chain disruptions.

Possible Solutions

The way supply chains and corridors security has been handled so far reveals one core weakness: efficiency has been prioritized over resilience hence making them vulnerable during crisis with global implications. Over the last several decades, global trade systems have evolved around just-in-time delivery models, concentrated manufacturing hubs and heavily trafficked maritime routes. However, the US-Iran conflict showed that when strategic chokepoints become unstable, these tightly optimized systems can break down quickly, therefore their resilience is very important. Within this context, to have a regional emergency response mechanism with crisis management plan should be framed in advance. Especially the threat of terrorism can only be averted if the focus shifts on how to make these strategic chokepoints resilient.

Another major lesson from this war is the urgent need for enhanced maritime monitoring system especially through modern technologies. Governments and international organizations must invest in advanced surveillance technologies capable of tracking threats in real time, which can prove effective in time of war or terrorist attacks. Commercial shipping companies can develop their own mechanism of intelligence sharing, especially in the time of crisis to calibrate a collective response, which will be more effective than individual responses.

The US-Iran war has revived the debate about international collaborative control of strategic waterways. While sovereign nations naturally maintain territorial interests, the global importance of chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb suggest that international oversight is essential. An expanded international system under international organizations such as United Nations can prove helpful in establishing standardized global procedures of emergency response, security protocols and coordinated patrol system. This approach will reduce the burden on any single country while encouraging collective responsibility.

Such collective arrangements may not avert the geopolitical tensions but prove helpful in averting the negative implications of global and regional conflicts and terrorist incidents on maritime supply chains, corridors and chokepoints.
