Assistant Professor

Dr. Petros Violakis is an Assistant Professor – Homeland Security at the Rabdan Academy, Senior Researcher at the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Research partner of Intelligence & Cyber Security Lab and of Strategic Communications and Mass Media Lab of Piraeus University (Greece). He holds a PhD degree in Politics from Exeter University, an MA in International Relations from University of Indianapolis, an MBA (focus in Marketing) and a BSc in Computer Science from University of Hertfordshire. 

Dr Violakis latest research is being situated within Cyber Security, Homeland Security, Resilience, Politics, Strategic Communications, Fake/ Falsified News, Policy Making and European Studies. More specifically, he investigates the Europeanisation of EU Defence and Security Policy through different perspectives and contributing factors, such as: domestic politics, political economy, establishment of a new security identity and culture, research and development (R&D), globalization and other institutional influence (NATO). 

His research is published as collective volumes chapters titled “Cyber Attacks, Cyber Coercion and attribution” (2022), “Towards a Common Defense and Security Policy: Migration and Security Issues in the Eastern Mediterranean” (2021), “NATO- EU Relations: Is a greater EU self-defense autonomy, possible and useful?” (2020) in “Defence Integration of the European Union” and as an academic book (monograph), entitled “Europeanisation and the Transformation of EU Security Policy: Post-Cold War Developments in the Common Security and Defence Policy” (2018) by Routledge. He has also published extensively in the areas of EU Defence Policy, the Libyan Crisis, Turkey’s Neo-Ottoman Identity etc.
